Native Plants
What are native plants?
Native plants have evolved naturally over millennia in an area along with the area’s wildlife. These super plants are pretty self-sufficient. Once established, they’ll thrive without extra efforts like watering, feeding, or pruning. They also are vital to the ecosystem, feeding and sheltering the birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife that evolved with them. Plus, they’re incredibly beautiful. What could be better than that?
Aim for your property to have 70% native plants: Think 2/3 for the birds! For every three plants you buy at the nursery, make sure two are native. According to research when you grow 70% native plants, you provide enough habitat for healthy populations of birds, butterflies, and bees. No need to rip out what you’re growing now, just some incorporate new native plants into existing beds or, better yet, reduce your lawn and give that space to these horticultural super plants. The greater the variety—grasses, perennials, shrubs, trees—you grow, the greater the variety of pollinators and birds you’ll host. Find the native plants for your region here:
