The Georgica Pond Preserve

A majestic tree snag stands in the newly restored grassland meadow in the Georgica Pond Preserve. Judging by the abundance of owl pellets at the base of the snag, birds of prey have been frequenting its limbs.

In fall 2025, Perfect Earth teamed up with partners Peconic Land Trust, Whitmores, and Piazza Horticultural, the nature-based branch of Whitmores, to add screening plants and create an educational programming space to the recently restored Georgica Pond Preserve in Wainscott, NY.

Together, we planted a mix of beautiful native plants including trees and shrubs like white pine, American holly, eastern red cedar, bayberry, and arrow wood viburnum. We also created a mowed area of the preserve with log benches for future educational programming. This site has been transformed over the last few years to represent an example of restored Long Island native grassland habitat. Local wildlife is already making use of the space. We’ve seen snakes, seen evidence of birds of prey, and, of course, we see and hear lots of songbirds and insects.

We are looking forward to hosting programs in the preserve in 2026. Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed!

Thank you to Kathy Rayner/the Cox Foundation and Peconic Land Trust for their generous support.
